It has taken me years of fooling around with iris compounds and ludicrously expensive naturals to come up with Green Iris. I had set out to make Black Iris, an iris perfume with a dark animal edge, but as the project progressed, it was clear the perfume wanted to go in a green direction. The owner of a perfume store in my Brooklyn neighborhood said it was one of the best things he had smelled all year. A perfume representative who was standing in the shop when I first brought it in, let out “Iris!” Given that making an accurate iris has eluded perfumers for years, I am proud of it. It doesn’t last as long as I would like—about 3 hours.
