The Formulation and Preparation of Cosmetics, Fragrances and Flavors, Louis Appel, 1982 (458 pages)
While this book contains valuable information about perfume, there is a lot about soap making, shaving preparations, shampoos and hair dyes. The most interesting section (to the perfumer) is in the second half of the book where “Physical Aspects of Odor” are discussed. Particularly interesting is the discussion of vapor pressure with a chart that shows the vapor pressures of common perfume materials. There is a list of scientific laws—evaporation law, ideal gas law, Raoult’s law, and the Hertz effusion reaction, to name a few. There are even mathematical formulas to explain these concepts. There are many formulations for perfumes and fragrances as well as a long list of aroma chemicals. I wish there were more about the art of composition. As far as I can see, the book is in perfect condition.
